Dr. Metzger has worked in a variety of patient populations, including individuals with severe mental illness, developmental concerns, psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, complicated grief and loss, and trauma and stress related disorders. Dr. Metzger currently supervises doctoral students at a non profit mental health clinic and teaches doctoral students part time at a regional graduate schools for professional psychology.

Matthew Metzger, Ph.D.

is a Licensed Psychologist (PSY 25425) and graduate of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California. Dr. Metzger is also a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and graduate of the Healthy Hypnotherapy Institute in Richmond, California.


Dr. Metzger has been trained in emergency response treatment, crises intervention, addiction and substance dependency, and psychometric assessment, including extensive and specialized expertise in psychopathology assessment and diagnosis. Dr. Metzger is trained in Psychoanalysis and Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), accompanied by expertise in a variety of psychotherapeutic modalities including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT), and Object Relations theory.
